Trees for Missoula Volunteers Make a Difference!

Trees for Missoula offers opportunities throughout the year for individuals and groups to learn about trees and take part in the physical work of tree planting and care. Whether you want to plant or prune public trees, advocate for trees across the Missoula community, or obtain the skills to steward your trees at home, we appreciate your contribution to the health of our urban forest! Check out information about our volunteer opportunities below and click the Volunteer Form button to sign up to become a Trees for Missoula volunteer.

tree ambassadors program

In the spring of 2024, we launched our Tree Ambassadors Program in an effort to connect with community members and ensure an equitable distribution of trees across Missoula’s neighborhoods. Trees Ambassadors can assist in caring for TFM planted trees, connect with your neighbors regarding tree planting or share education, and advocate for urban trees broadly. You are welcome to help with any or all of these efforts as an ambassador! To learn more or to volunteer with this program, fill out our volunteer form or email info@treesformissoula.org.

Planting Trees

Every fall and spring, Trees for Missoula aims to hold community plantings in City of Missoula parks and public Rights-of-Way. We accomplish this with the help of volunteers. To stay updated about volunteer tree planting opportunities, sign up for our email list.

Do you have a group that is interested in planting trees this fall and would like to plan a tree-planting event? Please fill out the volunteer form.

pruning Trees – Volunteers In Pruning (VIPs) Program

Each fall, Urban Forestry staff trains community volunteers in the skill of formative pruning in exchange for time pruning to help shape Missoula’s youngest trees. During the winter months, trained VIPs prune city trees under the guidance of a certified arborist from the Urban Forestry Division.

If you’re interested in learning this valuable skill and shaping our young city trees, please fill out the volunteer form.

Native plant restoration

Volunteers weed at the shade shelter 2025

Trees for Missoula (TFM) and Climate Smart Missoula (CSM) maintain a shade shelter at the corner of 6th St and Ronan St, right along the Bitterroot bike trail. See the background of this and learn where our other shade shelters are located on the Climate Smart Missoula site. This shelter site features native plants and serves as a small but meaningful restoration space in our community.

We’re looking for passionate volunteers who want to help care for native plants. If you’re interested in environmental stewardship and hands-on restoration work, this is a great opportunity!

Duties include weeding, watering, planting, and general upkeep. To learn more or to volunteer with this program, fill out our volunteer form or email info@treesformissoula.org.
